Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are ligand-activated transcription factors of nuclear hormone receptor superfamily comprising of the following three subtypes: PPARα, PPARγ, and PPARβ/δ. Cetaben is an unique PPARα-independent peroxisome proliferator with hypolipidemic activity, characterized by reduction in serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in rats. Cetaben has the ability to inhibit cholesterol production in human hepatoma Hep-G2 cells.
